Visual novel, character, release and producer data from VNDB (vndb.org), available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0; individual contents under the Database Contents License (DbCL) v1.0.
Characters, visual novels, releases, producers, traits. The only planned provider that grants redistribution outright, which is what makes a public API over VNDB-derived fields possible at all. The obligation attached to that grant is share-alike on the *database*: publishing a substantial part of this data can require the derived database to be offered under ODbL too. That is recorded here rather than in prose because it is a statement about what this atlas is, and a query should be able to find it.

Anime cross-reference data from AniDB.net, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.
NonCommercial, inside the same API response as the ODbL metadata. This row exists so the boundary is expressible and auditable, and it is expected to stay empty: the adapter does not request the `anime` field at all, so the strictest reading is enforced by not having the data rather than by filtering it later. ikuwayo! already sources anime from AniList, so nothing is lost. If it is ever imported, `commercial_use_status = prohibited` is what keeps it out of a commercial-facing path.

Carved out of the ODbL grant explicitly — "may be subject to separate license conditions" — and per-image rights vary by uploader in a way the API does not expose. No VNDB image is fetched, cached or served. The row exists so that "we did not resolve this" is a stored answer rather than an absence someone later reads as permission.

Carved out alongside images. This project already declines to store the prose body of any provider description — only structured fields lifted out of one — so the carve-out and the existing rule happen to agree. That agreement is luck rather than design, and it is written down here so that changing the rule has to pass this row first.

Requires Twitch client credentials. Redistribution of the metadata in an API of our own has not been confirmed, so the public ikuwayo! API must not expose IGDB-sourced fields until that is resolved.

Terms read in full 2026-08-22 and recorded per dataset in `source_datasets`, because section 4 of https://vndb.org/d17 grants three different things in one response: ODbL + DbCL on the structured metadata, CC BY-NC-SA on the AniDB-derived anime cross-references, and no grant at all on images and descriptions. The ODbL grant is what makes VNDB the only planned provider whose fields a public API may carry; the obligation that comes with it is share-alike on the database. The anime cross-references are not requested at all — ikuwayo! already sources anime from AniList, so the strictest reading costs nothing. The only source with first-class spoiler-aware traits, which map directly onto the ikuwayo! spoiler levels; a trait marked spoiler 2 upstream must arrive as spoiler 2. Body-measurement traits and the `(Sexual)` trait groups are dropped at the adapter boundary — the first because the namespace is prohibited product-wide, the second because this atlas has no vocabulary for a sexual act and VNDB cannot affirm adulthood (it returns `age: null` for characters it also files under `Body: Teen`). Neither refusal excludes a character or a work: association with an adult release is not a selection criterion here.

The first provider turned on for anything beyond a ranking, and the only one whose licensing needed no argument: statements are CC0. Characters are resolved by AniList character ID (P11736), never by name — 287 of the ranked 500 match. It supplies the hair and eye colours the natural-language query has always promised and the ranked corpus never had, and the Chinese names AniList structurally cannot provide. Values are stored as QIDs; the English label beside one is never what the seed maps on. Commons media carries per-file licences and stays out of scope.
